Urbino is a wonderful Renaissance city, one of the best conserved examples in Italy of those that represent the culture and art of that period. It is actually for this reason that its historical city centre was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site, so you have yet another reason for organising your next holiday or weekend break in these hills in the Marche region.
Urbino was already an important centre in Roman times, more precisely during the Gothic wars. Subsequently it came under Frankish supremacy which offered it to the Papal States. As from 1200, Urbino started to become disputed among the various noble families in the area and it was in this very era that it experienced a period of great splendour under the rule of the famous leader Frederick of Montefeltro.
Under the leadership of Frederick, art and culture literally blossomed in Urbino; the greatest artists of that time were summoned to court, such as Piero della Francesca, Leon Battista Alberti, Francesco di Giorgio Martini. Thanks to the Renaissance culture in Urbino also the brilliance of Raphael, who was born in this area, was able to develop in all its grandeur.
Urbino is marvellous in every season. In order to visit it, you just have to leave your car just outside the city walls – or park it free of charge in the car park of our 3-star hotel, if you are guests at the Hotel Piero della Francesca – and walk through the historical city centre among the timeless wonders, you will be amazed at the old traditional craft shops that today still produce beautiful items just as they did in the past.
